Democrats add banker, former mayor and sheriff to ticket

The Ohio County Democrat Party held a caucus on Wednesday, June17 to fill its slate of candidates for the Rising Sun City Election in November.

Brent Bascom will head up the ticket as candidate for mayor. He is a newcomer to the local political scene. The Lawrenceburg High School and Thomas More graduate is branch manager of the MainSource Bank in Rising Sun. He and his wife Gina (Walton) have two children.

Longtime clerk treasurer Rae Baker Gipson along with Dennis ‘Bud’ Radcliff (incumbent councilman at large) and former school board member John Rumsey (third precinct councilman candidate) were on the primary ballot.

Former Ohio County Sheriff Francis Swede Colen won the only primary race in precinct one.

Former mayor Bill Marksberry was selected for the second precinct councilman nomination.

New to the Ohio County political scene is Garry Forwood, 67, a former Switzerland County Sheriff, who will run for the precinct four council seat. He will be opposed by Dennis Williams (currently serving on council after Gary Kinnett won election to the school board).

Mayor April Hautman and Williams were the lone republicans registered before the primary. Hautman, a former longtime county councilman, has been serving as mayor since Branden Roeder stepped down to become school superintendent. Hautman is loan officer at the Rising Sun branch of Friendship State Bank.

The Ohio County Republican Party will have its caucus later this month.
