Defense, hot shooting leads to blowout at Waldron

Rising Sun posted a lopsided 81 to 49 win over potential sectional foe Waldron on Saturday, Jan. 27th at Waldron.

Rising Sun improved to .500 on the season at 7-7 while Waldron (Class A state champs four years ago) dropped to 2-16.

It was a close game for one half as Rising Sun led 10 to 7 after one quarter and 30 to 24 at the half.

A brutal full court press led to a 34 to 8 Shiner advantage in the third quarter to double up the Mohawks 64 to 32 with one quarter remaining

Nick Koons was back on track after a season low five points the night before to lead the way with 20 points (8-for-13 from the field).

Brent Turner added 19 on 8-for-11 from the field.

Trenton Gridley made double figures for the fourth time and second straight game with 10.

Noah Pflum added nine points, five rebounds and four steals a night after a season high 18 points.

Intensity spark Wesley Rider had seven points, five assists and four steals.

Jason McClellan added six points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Chris Bowne had two and Landon Cole one to round out the scoring.

The Shiners pressing defense forced 24 turnovers and led to easy baskets. That resulted in 52 percent shooting (28-for-54) from inside the arc while limiting the Mohawks to 36 percent from two point range. The hosts were 8-for-21 from 3-point range. The Shiners were just 16-for-26 or 52 percent at the line. Rising Sun had a 37 to 20 rebounding advantage, led by Turner with nine.

Waldron was led by Drew Everhart with 15 including three 3-pointers. Other scoring came from Shawn Cole seven, Tyler Bowlby seven, Cole Adams seven, Zane Smith four, Jacobi Percell four, Parker Huffman three, and Zeke Smith two.

Rising Sun made it a sweep of the night with a reserve win, 60 to 56 win in overtime.

Waldron led 12 to 8 after one quarter but the Shiners went up 21 to 20 at the half.

The Mohawks regained a 35 to 33 lead after three quarters

The game went to overtime tied at 50 after Chris Bowne made the second of two free throws.

Landon Cole’s steal and basket keyed the overtime while free throws by Brent Webb and Jake Powell helped seal the win.

Chris Bowne led RS scorers with 16 points. Cole added 15 and Powell 13. Webb finished with seven while Daniel Daugherty added six, Max Bowne three and Bryce Abner two

Waldron’s Zeke Smith and Eli Jones led all scorers with 19 each.
