Davis scores on 89-yard run; but Pacers fall in football opener

  The Switzerland County Pacer varsity football team opened its season on Friday night, August 20th, by hosting Crawford County. In a tough opening game played in extreme heat, the Wolfpack claimed the win by a 33-6 count.

  After a scoreless first quarter, Crawford County dented the scoreboard by posting 13 points in the second period to take a 13-0 lead into halftime.

  The Wolfpack’s first score came on a 90 yard run with the PAT being good; and the second touchdown came on a 13-yard scamper. This time the PAT was no good.

  The Pacers drew closer in the third quarter, when Switzerland County quarterback Matt Davis found an opening and raced 89 yards for a touchdown. Levi Goldsberry’s PAT attempt was off, and the Pacers trailed 13-6.

  Crawford County didn’t waste any time extending its lead, however, as the Wolfpack back took the ensuing kickoff and rand it back 60 yards for another touchdown. Again the PAT was no good, and Crawford County led 19-6

  Deeper into the third quarter, Crawford County went on an offensive march that resulted in a four yard touchdown run. This time the Wolfpack converted a two-point conversion; making the score 27-6 in favor of the visitors at the end of the third quarter.

  Crawford County continued to highlight its running game in the final stanza, and the final score came on a three yard run. With the PAT again no good, the score moved to 33-6, and that’s where it stayed until the final horn.

  Switzerland County found all of its offense on the ground, as quarterback Davis was 0-for-2 in passing attempts; but balanced that by having 13 rushing attempts for 175 total yards and the lone touchdown.

  Gabe Rose had eight rushing attempts for 14 yards; Tyler Hoskins had two attempts for four yards; and Daniel Whitham added two rushing attempts for three yards.

  Team totals showed the Pacers with 196 total yards on 32 plays.

  Crawford County also was run-heavy, as the Wolfpack ran 57 plays, piling up 255 yards rushing and just 15 yards passing.

  Defensively for the Pacers, Gavin Reese had 10 tackles, five tackle assists, one sack and three tackles for a loss; Davis had six tackles and one tackle assist; Colton Parks had three tackles and two tackles assists; Whitham added two tackles and three tackle assists; and Rose had one tackle, two tackle assists, and one tackle for a loss.

  Also: Gabe Jackson had a fumble recovery, one tackle and three tackle assists; Carl Abplanalp had one tackle, one tackle assist and one tackle for a loss; Ethan Jones had one tackle and one tackle assist; Darion Graham had one tackle and one tackle assist; Tyler Weber had a tackle; Brevon May had one tackle, one sack and one tackle for a loss; Hoskins had a tackle assist; Dylan Land had a tackle assist; and Sam Galbreath added a tackle assist.
