Both the boys and girls varsity cross country teams earned championships at last Thursday night’s “Great Pumpkin Invitational” held at Versailles.

The boys team finished with a team score of 32 to outdistance South Ripley with 53; South Dearborn with 65; Rising Sun with 105; Jac-Cen-Del with 113; and Milan with 139. Madison Shawe did not have enough runners to record a team score.

Individually, senior Clay Meyer continued his dominance of the area with an individual win in a time of 17:25. Corey McFarland was second overall with a time of 17:49; and Tray Meyer made it a Pacer sweep of the top three spots with a time of 18:03.

Anthony Dennis was 11th overall in a time of 19:05; Quinn Meyer was 17th in a time of 20:10; Tanner Ross was 18th in a time of 20:16; and Bradlee Burk was 25th in a time of 21:38.

The Pacers ran without one of their top runners, as junior Josh Hon did not participate due to the death of his grandfather.

“Our hope is to continue to build off of each meet as we approach the conference and the sectional,” Coach Mark Boggs said.

The Lady Pacers won their portion of the invitational with a team score of 44 to finish ahead of South Dearborn with 54 and South Ripley with 69. Jac-Cen-Del finished with 84 points; Milan had 104; and Rising Sun and Madison Shawe did not record team scores due to lack of runners.

Individually, freshman Bre Hinman led the way with a third place overall finish in a time of 22:38.

Allie Mathews was sixth overall in a time of 23:25; Amber Meli was 13th in a time of 24:22; Alexis Carfield was 14th in 24:30; Beth Abbott was 15th in 24:31; and Andrea Brogan was 17th in 24:38.

Halie Thomas, the team’s seventh runner, did not participate, also because of the death of her grandfather.

“I am very excited with the way these girls are progressing,” Coach Boggs said. “The way our younger girls have gained experience to go along with our veteran leadership has been outstanding.”
