County Roads are closed

Switzerland County Highway Superintendent Chris Clerkin has announced that the recent heavy rains have resulted in the closing of two county roads.

Adkinson Hill Road has been closed due to the rain and weather eroding the roadway. It is now closed to all traffic, with the exception of residents who live on the road.

Chris Clerkin said that people who live on Adkinson Hill Road will need to access their homes via Tapps Ridge Road.

Also closed is Popcorn Ridge Road at the hill. Again, Chris Clerkin said that residents living on the road will need to access their homes using Tapps Ridge Road.

Chris Clerkin said that he would be discussing the situation with the Switzerland County Commissioners at their meeting on Monday night, and from there would figure out what steps to take next.

He said any repairs will go through an application process with the Department of Natural Resources, so no timeline for fixing the roads can be established until the state weighs in on the situation.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has closed State Road 262 between Dillsboro and Milton in Dearborn County after unstable soil conditions developed that threaten the integrity of the roadway and driver safety.

– Through-traffic is prohibited at the State Road 262 closure site located approximately three miles south of U.S. Highway 50.

• Residents have access to their homes via State Road 262 on either side of the barricades.

• An official state highway detour will be established at a later date.

INDOT officials noted that State Road 262 pavement in the southbound lane had dropped nearly three inches in the past week. The embankment adjacent to the highway is undermining the roadbed and sliding toward the bottom of the slope.

The state is retaining a specialty contractor to stabilize the slope through a process called “soil nailing”. A number of 20-foot steel shafts will be shot into the side of the embankment. Once the soil has been “nailed”, INDOT will determine what pavement repairs are needed.

State Road 262’s closure is expected to continue through the month.
