County mourns the loss of Jon Barnes in accident


The Switzerland County community was stunned last week with the accidental death of 24-year old Jon Barnes.

According to the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department, Switzerland County Communications received a call early Wednesday evening, August 19th, reporting an accident.

Officers, EMS personnel, and members of the East Enterprise Volunteer Fire Department responded to a residence at 348 Turtle Creek Road near Florence.

There, they found Jon Barnes pinned under a vehicle and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

News of the accident spread quickly through the community; as Jon Barnes and his family are well know here. Jon was born in Indianapolis, but had resided in Switzerland County since 1993.

He was a 2003 graduate of Switzerland County High School, and was employed as a shift leader operator at North American Stainless Steel in Carrollton, where he had worked for five years. He enjoyed motorcycles, boating, tinkering with his cars and trucks and his tractor.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Rose (Day) Barnes of Florence; his daughter, Kaydence Lynn Barnes of Florence; his parents, Mitch and Cyndi Barnes of Vevay and Terri (Stout) Barnes and companion Dan Petty of Lebanon, Ohio; his brothers, Jeff Barnes and wife Chasity Otter-Barnes of Vevay; Justin Barnes and girlfriend Emilee Waldron of Vevay; U.S. Army Corporal Jamin Moore of South Korea; and Aaron Moore of Franklin, Indiana.

Also surviving are his grandparents, Jerry and Linda Barnes of Vevay; Charlie and Carol Seymour of East Enterprise; and Gladys McGovern of Indianapolis; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lester McGovern.
