Congressman Hill visits Markland Business Park, federal grant coming

Ninth District Congressman Baron Hill was in Switzerland County recently to visit the site of the Markland Business Park.

The Congressman announced in January that Switzerland County is set to receive at $767,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). During his visit, Representative Hill was updated on the project timeline and on construction scheduled at the site during the summer months.

Work to be funded under the grant includes: road construction; water and sewer line extension; and storm drainage. Bidding for the project is expected to begin in June and work is expected continue into 2011.

One business has already chosen to call the new business park home. Process Systems and Services, Inc. announced in November, 2009, that it will construct a facility in the park this year.

Attending the meeting with Congressman Hill were County Councilmen Mike Jones and Steve Crabtree; as well as representatives of the Switzerland County Economic Development Corporation and the Switzerland County Redevelopment Commission.

Switzerland County purchased the property for the 100-acre Markland Business Park in 2007. Since that time the project has gone through extensive design and permitting with state and federal agencies.

The extension of utilities to the site began in 2008 and continued through 2009. The site has been certified as “Shovel Ready” by the State of Indiana.
