Community Foundation announces holiday grants for organizations

The Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc. has presented grants to seven area organizations to help assure that residents of Switzerland County will have a happy holiday season.

– Kiwanis Club of Vevay received $1,000 for its annual Children’s Christmas party. This party includes food, entertainment and gifts for the children. There is an average of 150 elementary school children that attend each year.

– Switzerland County Lions Club received $1,000 for a Christmas Angel Tree program. The Lions Club will work with the school system to assist needy children in Switzerland County.

– Quercus Grove Food Pantry received $3,000 to purchase supplies for the food pantry. If it receives enough food donations during the holiday season, this grant can be used throughout the next year.

– Swiss Villa Nursing and Rehab Center received $600 for holiday activities at the nursing home. The nursing home personnel are still determining what activities they plan on doing this year, but they always do something special for their residents.

– Moorefield Community Fire Department received $500 for Santa’s Kids. Moorefield Fire Department is partnering with the Moorefield Market and the Motorcycle Run to assure families in the area a happy holiday.

– Vevay American Legion received $1,000 to help with the Holiday Food Basket program. With the help of the Volunteer Fire Departments, 100-200 food baskets are provided to area families. Food for these baskets are provided by AEP, Belterra, 4-H Junior Leaders, FFA, Lions Club, American Legion and other donations.

– LifeTime Resources received $400 to have a holiday program at the Senior Center.

The Foundation also had three tables and 19 metal folding chairs returned from a previous grant. These items have been donated to the school system.

The Community Foundation is also providing a grant for the cost of the College Costs Estimator again this year. Any family or individual living in Switzerland County is eligible to complete the Estimator.

You may pick up a form a the Community Foundation office located at 303 Ferry Street (second door from the stop light) or go online at www.collegcosts.com.

After the completion of the form, you will send it to the National Center for College Costs, who will analyze your data. Each family will then receive a confidential family report telling you what your family will be expected to contribute towards your child’s college education.

An evening workshop will be held on February 21st to help you understand the report. The Center will also provide you with helpful tips on what to talk to colleges about and are always a free phone call away for answering questions you may have. All of this service is free through the generosity of a grant form the Community Foundation and Lilly Endowment Inc.
