reinstate three holidays
The Switzerland County Commissioners changed course and reinstated three holidays for county employees at their meeting held on Monday, December 17th.
At the Commissioners meeting on Monday, December 3rd, the commissioners voted to delete three holidays — Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; Columbus Day, and Presidents Day — from the list of paid days off for county employees.
At this past Monday’s meeting, a large crowd gathered to discuss the subject. Several employees asked the board to revisit the issue.
Commissioner Jerry Monjar, who voted for the removal of the three days at the last meeting along with Commissioner Josh South, said he had discussed the subject with county attorney, Wil Goering, and was prepared to change his vote after hearing public comments and meeting with Goering.
Monjar then made a motion to return the three holidays back into the 2019 schedule. The vote again was 2-1, this time with Monjar voting to reinstate along with Commissioner Mark Lohide, who had opposed taking away the holidays at the December 3rd meeting. South again voted to remove the holidays and leave the calendar as it had been approved at the December 3rd meeting.
In other business discussed by the commissioners:
• The board approved the agreement with FAST to service the fire alarm system. The contract will be at a cost of $7,350 per year.
• The board approved the contract with the Switzerland County YMCA at a cost of $15,000 per year.
• The HVAC contract with Nading, for $19,496, was approved.
• The last meeting of 2018 for the commissioners will be held on Friday, December 28th at 5 p.m. in the courthouse basement.
