Commissioners hold September meeting

The Switzerland County Commissioners met on Monday September 18th in a regularly scheduled meeting.

Matters discussed at the meeting included:

– Hannah Shelton of Switzerland County Tourism requested the use of the back parking lot of the courthouse for Tourism to use during Sleepy Hollow. She explained that Tourism will be setting up a bounce house and will have a petting zoo. The board gave her approval for the bounce house. They ask for more details about the petting zoo and will let her know after she gets back with them.

– The Commissioners discussed the phone/Internet situation with regard to the quotes from four companies. CenturyLink dropped its original quote and the board will make a decision at the next meeting.

– The Fall maintenance project at the Moorefield/Bennington Sewer District was approved to start. The project will involve the maintenance employees removing the sewage tank lid at each residence, clean it, and check the sludge in order to see if the tanks need to be cleaned out. The project will take a total of three days.

– The bridge work at Quercus Grove and Pendleton Run will not be started until Spring.

– The Highway Department will repair the slip on North Branch Road next week.

– The Commissioners did not approve paying a $4,000 fine to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, which was levied due to the installation of a culvert that was too small. The county will need to cleanup an environmental project in order to satisfy the fine implemented by IDEM.

Commissioner Josh South was against the project due to the fact that the project was on privately owned property.

– The county is faced with the possibility of hiring an engineer to oversee the requirements to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If the county does not comply with the self evaluation program, then it will not be in line to receive federal grants.
