Commissioners hold monthly meeting

The Switzerland County Commissioners met on Tuesday, January 16th, due to Monday being a national holiday.

Items discussed by the commissioners included:

– Katie Collier of the Soil and Water Conservation District gave an annual report from the organization’s projects.

– Switzerland County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Moore updated the board on the storm warnings going out to the public. He has changed the settings on the alert system so that the public will only get tornado, severe thunderstorm, and flash flood warnings 24 hours a day. All other alerts will only go out from 6 a.m. through 11 p.m.

Commissioner Josh South suggested that the director turn off the national weather service alerts and do it manually for Switzerland County. There had been some previous alerts sent out in the middle of the night, which needs to be eliminated.

– The Commissioners named Deborah Margison to the Switzerland County Public Library board.

– A three year contract was approved for GenSet to service and maintain the county generators in the amount of $10,504.

– The 2018 sheriff’s contract salary was approved in the amount of $74,371.The salary can be figured in three different ways, and the Commissioners based the amount on half of what the county prosecutor’s salary is.

– The Commissioners awarded the repair of bridge 35 to McAlisters Excavating with the bid of $487,552. Work will begin immediately on replacing and installing new decking on the bridge.

– The commissioners approved an estimate from Indiana Restoration to repair damage done to the courthouse during the water break.
