Coach Carrigan’s championships, caring come center court

Saturday, November 28th was the annual Rising Sun post-Thanksgiving boys’ basketball contest.

However, it was actually a night of thanksgiving.

Thanks to former cross country and basketball coach Denny Carrigan.

The 1998 boys’ basketball sectional champions and the 1997 cross country team members were recognized between the reserve and varsity basketball games. Both teams were coached by Carrigan.

The 1997-98 basketball team was the last team to win a boys’ title. The 1997 cross country sectional champions went on to place second in the regional and advance to the semistate prior to Klint Works and Jeff Rumsey closing the season at the state finals.

Carrigan was unable to be at the special evening as he is recovering from a successful surgery earlier in the week.

The Ohio County Park Board presented a plaque to the Carrigan family in recognition for the work he did to make the Denver Siekman Park a hometown cross country course. Known as the Beast of the Southeast, it is one of the most challenging courses.

Brian Graham also remembered those who were a big part in Denny’s life including the late Butch Brown (timer), Virgil Neaman (scorekeeper), Ronna Billingsley (cheer coach), Mike Wilson (athletic director) and Ken McIntosh (principal).

Unable to be there were cross country members Sam Chipman and Rickey Kelly, currently serving in the military.
