Rising Sun’s Riley Chipman was the lone Shiner to collect a blue ribbon at the 2018 girls Ohio River Valley Conference Track meet at Switzerland County.
Chipman won the shot put with a throw of 32’1 1/2” to edge out Switzerland County’s Jody Breeck by one inch (32’1/2”). Chipman was runner up in the discus (90’3”).
She was a member of the 400 relay team that placed second in 54.52. Other members included Kiera Mann, Kasey Baker and Kinsey Price
Price was second in the 100 (13.11). She pulled up lame in the 400 and could not compete in the 200 meter dash.
Mann was third in the 100 hurdles (17.69) and fourth in the long jump (13’7 1/2”) ahead of Switzerland County’s Willow Lieland (13’6 1/4”).
Mann teamed with Skylar Durham, Ashlee Turner and Haylee White to place fourth in the 1600 relay (4:57.38).
Baker was fifth in the 3200 (14:36.18). South Ripley’s Megan Cole broke her own conference record with a time of 11:43.09.
Cole won the 1600 as well with a time of 5:32.15 but did not best the record held by Rising Sun’s Caitlin Sauerhage of 5:24.9 set in 2005.
As a team, Rising Sun placed sixth. Switzerland County won the ORVC title with 125 points followed by Southwestern 68, Milan 68, South Ripley 63, Jac-Cen-Del 52, Rising Sun 50 and Shawe 38.
For the second year in a row, the boys’ portion of the meet was held two days later on Thursday, May 10. However, coaches were in favor of moving the meet to a single night as it had been in the past.
Rising Sun junior Daniel Daugherty had the big night for the Shiner boys with first place in the high hurdles (15.99). Daugherty came back to win the slow heat of the 300 hurdles and his time (43.52) was good enough for second place overall. Teammate Jake Scott was third in the 300 hurdles (44.55) after being fifth in the high hurdles (17.58).
Trevor Levi brought home a pair of second place finishes. His times of 4:56.09 in the 1600 and 11:03.41 in the 3200 were second to his Southwestern rival Bradley Winston (4:46.03 and 10:45.84).
Zander Gilb placed fifth in the 400 (54.58) and teamed with Francisco Cerecer, Scott, and Daugherty to place sixth in the 400 rely (50.45).
Scott and Cerecer joined Colton McKay and Andrew Anglin in placing sixth in the 1600 relay.
Southwestern won the boys meet with 117 followed by Milan 88, Jac-Cen-Del 73, Switzerland County 65, South Ripley 59, Rising Sun 46 and Shawe 16.
The boys compete in the East Central Sectional tonight (Thursday).
