It was 1956, and what county residents now refer to as the “Old Gym” was the host of a nine-team boys basketball Sectional tournament. Schools from Vevay, Patriot, Rising Sun, Aurora, Lawrenceburg, Moores Hill, Dillsboro, Bright, and Guilford were all a part of the tourney.
That Sectional would be the last one played in Vevay, and it was won by the Vevay Warriors.
Now, 50 years after that tournament ended, the players and other participants in that tourney will be honored tomorrow (Friday) night during the Switzerland County-South Ripley boys varsity basketball game.
The players, cheerleaders, managers, and others having a part in the sectional tournament will be treated to a hospitality room at the high school beginning at 5:30 p.m.; and at 6 p.m. those wanting to take a tour of the Old Gym will be shuttled to the gym for a look at the renovations that have taken place.
Between the junior varsity and varsity games, those in attendance will be introduced to the crowd, and banners representing each of the nine schools will be unveiled. The banners will be on display at the high school for a time before being put on permanent display in the Old Gym.
Each participant in attendance will receive a commemorative pin.
There is still time for those who participated to come to the event. The night is being coordinated by Wayne Daugherty — who was a member of Aurora’s 1956 Sectional team, and he hopes that players, managers, cheerleaders, and coaches from all nine of the schools will be in attendance tomorrow night.
For those members unable to attend or who have passed away, members of the person’s family have been invited to come and represent their loved one during the ceremony.
Anyone needing more information should contact Wayne Daugherty at 427-3489.
