Catfish Tourney reels in record crowd

The team of Petrowski, Petrowski and Neafus won the 2017 Ohio Valley River Cats Catfish Tournament.

Last year the team of Samantha and Thomas Petrowski and Henry Neafus of Brooks, KY. captured the big fish prize of $5290. The team also earned an extra $1,000 prize for being the top-ranking team with a female angler aboard. Their total catch was 116.4 pounds for a fourth place prize of and additional $1230.

On Sunday, Sept. 10th, the trio won the top prize of $10,000 during weigh in. They opened the two day tournament with a catch of 107.2 pounds on Saturday including the big fish of th day at 46 pounds.

They added 69.4 pounds on Sunday for a total winning weight of 176.6 pounds. They earned an extra $1000 for having a woman on the team for the second straight year while earning another $600 for the Driftmaster Challenge.

The big fish prize of $5730 went to Jonathan Nelson for his 49.6 pounder weighed in on Sunday. The New Castle, Ky. resident and his team was runner up with 137 pounds and a payout of $3149.

The team of Johnson and Johnson, last year’s winners, placed sixth with 111.2 ponds to earn $1216. Morris and Parsons (second after day one with 78.2 pounds)

finished fourth.

A total of 4840 pounds were weighed in with 2864 pounds on day one and 1976 pounds on day two. Each catfish that is caught is inspected by the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources to ensure they are healthy and log their measurements. The fish were released back into the river after the weigh-in.

There were a record 161 teams with 373 total anglers. They came from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.

A total of $35,918 was distributed.

This year’s tournament was dedicated in honor of Les Fogle.
