Thieman family farm honored by SWCD with Silver Star Award

Danny and Kathy Covington are Conservation Farmers of the Year

When they were informed that they were being honored as the 2004 Conservation Farmers of the Year by the Switzerland County Soil and Water District, Danny and Kathy Covington couldn’t help but laugh.

The couple has 40 acres of land near Fairview on State Road 250 — and Danny Covington says that he’s a little overwhelmed at receiving an honor for farming.

Supporting the troops

The Jefferson-Craig Elementary School student council recently held a fundraiser to help support county efforts to send packages to Switzerland County soldiers now serving in the Middle East. The group raised $250, which was donated to the American Legion Auxiliary, the group that is coordinating the shipments.

‘Read Across America’

Last week the nation celebrated “Read Across America,” A day devoted to reading in honor of the 101st birthday of Theodore Geisel, most famously known as Dr. Seuss. At Switzerland County Elementary School, a poster contest was held for classes to honor the occasion. Miss Lyle’s kindergarten class earned first place in the contest. Photo provided.

Bennington Pike closed for repairs

The bridge on Bennington Pike approximately one mile west of Mount Sterling will be replaced after years of service to county residents. The road will be closed for 25-30 days while the work is done.

Dru Morgan was crowned as the 2005 Switzerland County High School “Queen of Hearts” on Sunday afternoon, earning the crown from a field of 14 contestants.

Betty Lucas honored with ‘Sagamore of the Wabash’ award

Betty Lucas of the Switzerland County Health Department thought she was going to lunch with some friends and coworkers this past Friday. When she arrived, she found a room filled with friends and dignitaries, who again honored her for her years of dedicated service to the Switzerland County community.

Water Tank still a concern on Vevay hillside

The Vevay Town Council heard more information at its meeting on Monday evening concerning the slippage occurring around the new water tank on the hillside just west of town.
