Superintendent to School Board: new state budget puts pressure on schools for funds

Superintendent Tracy Caddell pulled no punches Monday night when he spoke to the school board and the community with regard to the new state budget. Governor Mitch Daniels and the Republican-controlled legislature hailed the budget as “balanced without raising taxes” — but the school superintendent has a much different view.

Retiring teacher

Switzerland County Middle School math teacher Jean Sandidge was honored at Monday night’s meeting of the Switzerland County School Board. Jean Sandidge will retire at the end of this school year after 37 years of teaching — 31 of those in the Switzerland County School System. Presenting her with a school bell is school board president Jack Ranz.

Retiring this year

Switzerland County High School English teacher Emory Leon Hostetler was honored on the occasion of his retirement from teaching in the Switzerland County School System on Monday night at the school board meeting. Leon Hostetler has taught for 19 years, with 17 of those coming here. School board president Jack Ranz presented the retiring teacher with a gift of appreciation.

Cheerleader coach

After 10 years of coaching the Switzerland County High School cheerleaders, Lisa Fisher is retiring. She was presented a plaque for her contributions to the school and the cheerleading program at Monday night’s meeting of the school board. Board president Jack Ranz made the presentation.

Greg Fillenwarth is new nurse practitioner at Switzerland County Nurse-Managed Clinic

When Greg Fillenwarth picked up the Indianapolis paper one day, he joked to family members that he was going to see what jobs were “out there for nurse practitioners.”

Keith Smith takes over presidency of Vevay Town Council

The three members of the Vevay Town Council have divided their four-year term into three 16-month terms, with each member of the board assuming the presidency of the board for one of those terms.

County Visitors Center now open at location on Main Street

The Visitors Center has moved.

The Switzerland County Visitors Center is now officially open at 128 West Main Street in Vevay. The staff of the Visitors Center is very excited about the “new space”, and they think you will be, too.

New Recycling Center is now open in East Enterprise

The Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste District, in cooperation with Switzerland and Ohio county officials, have officially opened a recycling center at the former Plastic Moldings factory in East Enterprise.

Daylight Savings Time will begin in 2006

After some last-minute maneuvering, the Indiana General Assembly last week voted to implement Daylight Savings Time in Indiana.

The time switch will occur on the first Sunday in April, 2006. For the remainder of this year, the state will remain as it has been — with people talking about “slow time” and “fast time”.

Superintendent is finalist at Shelbyville

Switzerland County School Superintendent Tracy Caddell confirmed this week that he is a finalist for the superintendent’s position at the Shelbyville Central School Corporation in Shelby County, Indiana.
