The Rising Sun Lady Shiners opened Ohio River Valley Conference play with a 40 to 36 win over Milan on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Rising Sun.
Senior Lucy Carrigan led the way with 26 points while dominating the boards with a career high 22 of Rising Sun’s 33 rebounds.
The game was close throughout with the visiting Lady Indians leading 8 to 7 and 17 to 16 after the first two eight minute stanzas.
Rising Sun tied the game at 17 before Milan went on an 8 to 0 run in the third quarter for the largest lead by ether team.
Milan closed the quarter with a 31 to 28 advantage.
Rising Sun took the lead after a Sydney Bostic basket and Danyka Groover scoring off an assist from Carrigan.
Milan’s Maddy Roell gave Milan its final lead of the night on a 3-pointer. Carrigan answered with her second 3-pointer of the night then finished off the evening with a pair of free throws (10-for-11) and the victory.
Milan had defeated the Lady Shiners 52 to 43 earlier in Milan.
Carrigan finished with 5-for-17 from two point range and 2-for-8 from behind the arc. Overall the Shiners were 10-for 33 from two point range and 14-for-19 from the line.
Danyka Groover added 10 points and five rebounds. Sydney Bostic had a basket with Emma Levi and Sydney Pitts scoring a free throw each. Maddi Wilson had a pair of rebounds and steals. RS had 23 turnovers. Saige Groover had three assists.
Milan was led by Courtney Bruns with 14. Lexi Wert added six followed by Dakota Wolfe five, Taylor Amberger four, Maddy Roell three, Alexa Burton two and Nicole Tuttle two.
Rising Sun dropped to 1-1 in ORVC play and 8-10 overall after hosting the Class 2A No. 2 ranked South Ripley Lady Raiders on Thursday, Jan. 11th.
South Ripley (winners of the Ripley County Invitational) pressed its way to a 20 to 4 lead after one quarter, led 31 to 13 at the half and 5 o 28 after three quarters en route to a 58 to 32 win.
South Ripley was led by Elexah Roepke with 16 points and 15 rebounds along with 14 from Kiley Sparks.
Carrigan scored 20 points including a 3-pointer and 3-for-7 at the line. It marked the 41st straight game in double figures dating back to Jan. 26, 2016 when she scored nine points against Switzerland County.
She led the team in rebounding with eight.
Danyka Groover had four points and four boards while her sister Saige had three points and three rebounds.
Freshman Maddi Wilson got the start for Sydney Bostic (out with a wrist injury) and added two points. Sydney Pitts added a basket and Emma Levi a free throw.
Rising Sun struggled at the line making 9 of 21.
Rising Sun was scheduled to play at Southwestern (Hanover) on Tuesday and at Jac-Cen-Del tonight (Thursday). The regular season closes next week as Rising Sun travels to Switzerland County on Tuesday and host Shawe next Thursday.
Carrigan needed just five points to pass John Adams (1586) for second place on the all-time scoring list. Jessica Brock holds the record with 1719 points.
