Candidate forum is tonight at Hoosier Theater as election nears


With the General Election now just 12 days away, the Switzerland County community is invited to attend a “Meet the Candidates” forum that will be held tonight (Thursday). The forum will be held at the Historic Hoosier Theater in Vevay, and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

All candidates on the November General Election ballot have been invited to participate, including local, state, and national elections; as well as candidates for the Switzerland County School Board.

So far the following candidates have either agreed to attend, or will be represented by a supporter.

– Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama will be represented by Dr. Jim Crone.

– U.S. Representative Democrat Baron Hill will be represented by David Bond; and Republican candidate Mike Sodrel will be represented by Ryan Reger.

– Republican Incumbent Governor Mitch Daniels will be represented by Travis Roll; Democrat candidate Jill Long Thompson will be represented by Dustin White; and Libertarian candidate Andy Horning is also expected to have a representative at the forum.

– State Representative from District 68 Democrat Bob Bischoff will be in attendance; as will his opponent, Republican Jud McMillin.


Locally, candidates that have confirmed that they will be in attendance at the forum include:

– Democrat candidate for Judge Greg Coy.

– Democrat candidate for Prosecuting Attorney Monica Hensley.

– Democrat candidate for County Recorder Darla McAlister.

– Republican County Commissioner Brian Morton; and Democratic challenger Danny Hehe.

– Democrat County Councilmen At Large Steve Crabtree and Darrell Hansel; Republican County Councilman At Large John Keeton; and Democratic candidate Steve Lyons.

– School Board candidates who have confirmed their attendance include: incumbent Bill Roberts and challenger Mark Lohide from Cotton Township; incumbent Jim Phipps and challenger Denise Maxwell of Pleasant Township; and incumbent Wayne Daugherty and challenger Ron Otter of the Town of Vevay.

The event is being coordinated by the Swiss Roundtable group. Questions for the forum will be solicited through the group’s website:; from the newspaper; and in selected locations around the county.

Candidates for each office will be asked the same questions, with a two-minute response time for each question.

The forum will be moderated by Dr. Robert Findley and by resident Nancy Peters.
