The 2016 high school cross country season will continue for Rising Sun juniors Kasey Baker and Trevor Levi as they qualified for the Shelbyville Semi-State as individuals during the Shelbyville Regional on Saturday, Oct. 15th.
Baker ran a personal best 19:55 to place 15th overall and was the seventh individual to advance that was not on an advancing team. Teammate Lucy Carrigan also had a personal best time of 22:57 in placing 68th.
Levi will join Baker after he recorded a 26th place time of 17:04 and was ninth among the 10 qualifying to advance. He finished ahead of East Central’s Andrew White who was two places ahead of him in the South Dearborn Sectional. Shiner Zach Martini just missed a return trip to the semi-state as he was 28th in 17:08 and one spot behind White.
It was just Martini’s third race of the season as he had earlier won the Ohio River Valley Conference title and placed fourth in the sectional. He suffered a stress fracture early in the season but will one to contend with in his final season of track this spring.
Baker and Levi will race on Saturday, Oct. 22nd at the Shelbyville Semi-State. The women’s race starts at 3:00 p.m. followed by the men’s competition.
Baker will be joined by ORVC foe Megan Cole who placed 10th overall and the fifth individual in 19:38. Jac-Cen-Del’s Shianna Bellingham (20:38) was the ninth individual to quality and 24th overall.
Southport’s Erin Sullivan and Lexie Green were 1-2 (18:03 and 18:41) and their team had three in the top 10
Center Grove’s Valerie Clark was third in 18:52. Her team placed five in the top 16 and all seven in the top 21 to take the team title by one, 56-57, over Southport. Batesville placed third with 89 followed by East Central with 137 and Franklin 141 to round out the top five teams qualifying for the semi-state.
Other team scores included Whiteland 145, Mooresville 153, Oldenburg 185, Greensburg 199 and Milan 291.
Oldenburg Academy’s Curtis Eckstein blew away the field with a new course record time of 14:50. Runner up Michael Crook finished in 15:59.
Center Grove made it a team sweep with 58 points. Other semi-state qualifying teams were Franklin 86, Southport 90, Greenwood 121, and Batesville 140. Other team scores included Perry Meridian 142, Oldenburg 156, East Central 173, South Dearborn 221, and Greensburg 239.
South Dearborn’s Christopher Weissmann placed 24th and qualified as an individual.
