Ashley Poling is 2008 Edelweiss Teen Princess of the Swiss Wine Festival

This year’s Swiss Wine Festival began last Thursday evening with the crowning of the Edelweiss Teen Princess on the Main Stage, and this year’s winner was Ashley Poling.

She reigned over the final three days of the festival along with Princess Emilee Waldron and Prince Jacob Haskell.

Ashley Poling is the daughter of Wesley and Ragina Poling of near Vevay; and is a junior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She was sponsored in this year’s pageant by Errol Judy Construction.

She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society; the Pep Club; STATS; and FFA, where she is active in the club’s homeless project. She is a member of the jayvee and varsity volleyball teams; the junior varsity softball team; and earned a perfect attendance award last year. She also attends Big Stuf Camp in Panama City Beach, Florida; and is on the A-B Honor Roll.

Following graduation she plans on attending Indiana University to pursue a career as a pediatric physical therapist.

The first runner up in this year’s Teen Princess pageant was Jessie Ray.

She is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School; and was sponsored in this year’s pageant by The Julia Knox House Gift Shop. She is the daughter of Troy Ray of near Vevay and Billie Ray of Vevay.

Jessie Ray was president of her freshman class; and is active in the Switzerland County FFA chapter, where she earned first place in the District 12 extemporaneous public speaking competition. She has earned inclusion on the A-B Honor Roll, and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She is a member of the volleyball team; and is a varsity cheerleader.

Her career goal is to have a job in the medical profession that allows her to wear business attire.

Ashley Green was honored as the second runner up in Thursday’s pageant.

She is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School, and was sponsored in this year’s pageant by The Mustard Lady. She is the daughter of Jenny and Greg Green of near East Enterprise.

She has earned academic awards in Spanish, English, and science; and was a member of the All A Honor Roll for both semesters of her freshman year. She was the Most Improved Player on her soccer team; earned Best Section honors in band; and is a member of the varsity soccer team. She is involved in 4-H, having earned showmanship honors with her swine project, and she is also involved in the Junior Leaders.

She plans on attending Purdue University following graduation with a career goal of becoming a veterinarian.

The third runner up was Shayla Smith.

Shayla Smith is the daughter of Betty Andrew of near Pleasant and Troy Smith of near Vevay; and is a junior at Switzerland County High School. She was sponsored in the pageant by Mo’s Steakhouse.

In high school she is active in student council; the Switzerland County FFA chapter; and the French Club. She is active in the Pep Club; has earned inclusion on the Honor Roll; and is a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys volleyball, running, singing, cooking, swimming, an working with computers.

Following graduation her career plans are to attend The Ohio State University and study to become a clinical psychologist.

Andrea Brogan was the fourth runner up in the Teen Princess pageant.

She is the daughter of James and Rita Brogan of Florence, and was sponsored in the pageant by Mary Kay Cosmetics, Patty Chase. She is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School.

She participates in cross country, where last year she earned the Most Valuable Freshman Award and the Most Improved Award; is a varsity cheerleader; and also participates in track. She was the fourth runner up in the 2007 Teen Princess Pageant; was vice president of her freshman class; and is involved in the FFA, Pep Club, and 4-H Junior Leaders. She is a member of the Florence Church of Christ.

Following high school she plans on pursuing a career as a registered nurse; and someday hopes to work on AirCare.

Honored by her fellow contestants as Miss Congeniality was Hailee Thomas.

Halie Thomas was sponsored in this year’s pageant by the Switzerland County High School Key Club; and is a sophomore at Switzerland County High School. She is the daughter of Harold and Tina Thomas of near Vevay.

She is a varsity cheerleader this year; and is also active in the Key Club; the Pep Club; and the Switzerland County FFA chapter. She is also a member of the Switzerland County High School cross country and track teams.

She is undecided on her plans following high school.

Other contestants in this year’s pageant included: Kim Cox, Chelsea Duvall, Bailey Judy, Paige Kelly, and Ashley Works.
