Sophomore Leah Anders led the Switzerland County Lady Pacers track team to a historic night at the Jeffersonville Sectional on Tuesday night – where they were able to score four Sectional championships in individual events and set a new school record in the 1,600 meter relay.
Anders, who won the open 800-meter run in dominating fashion, winning in a time of 2:28.50; also anchored they 1,600-meter relay team made up of MacKenzie Covington, Ally Furnish, and Moriah Northcutt.
The relay team posted a time of 4:21.16, which broke a school record that had stood since 1996.
The other Sectional championships for the Lady Pacers came in the field events, where freshmen Aleiah Thomas cleared a season best height of 5’2″ inches to take home the high jump title; and senior Natalie Newman had a career best discus toss of 105’6″ in order to take that title home.
At the sectional the top three finishers in any event advance to Regional; so aside from the sectional champions, Switzerland County athletes also advanced in other events on the night.
Newman earned second place in the shot put to advance; as did the 3,200 meter relay team of Covington, Magnolia Clayton, Matty Anderson and Anders.
The lone third place on the evening was freshmen Ally Furnish in the 300-meter hurdles, advancing with an excellent time.
“Overall it was a tremendous effort by the girls, and a very rewarding evening,” Coach Adam Pietrykowski said. “I am truly excited for the Regional, where the girls will have an excellent opportunity to compete for good places and possibly a place in the State meet in June.”
