50 YEARS AGO

August 1st, 1968

Two places of business here plan official openings Wednesday, August 7th through 10th. The DEW Sporting Goods Store and Christian’s IGA Supermarket are planning big specials for the four days. Special prices and discounts will be given. The IGA Christian’s Supermarket recently moved into the new location across from the courthouse from the corner of Main and Poplar streets and the DEW Sporting Goods Store is a new business opened up next door by Eddie Weisickle. Mr. Weisickle has the office for the Rising Sun Oil Company at this location also.
The 4-H Dress Revue will be Saturday, August 10th at 1:30 p.m. in the Rising Sun Elementary School gymnasium. Participants include the 1967 Dress Revue Honor Group — Linda Cutter, formal; Sharon Cutter, Linda Hinz, Sharon Brown, Shirley Cutter, and Diane Rand. The Dress Revue will climax the 4-H Exhibit which will be August 9th and 10th.
Katrina Eisenman, age 6, won four honors riding her horse “Lucky” Sunday at the Youth Show held at Fairview. The little six year old Miss won three first and one second. Katrina was noticed by the Madison Radio Station representative while participating in the 4-H Fair at Vevay and was interviewed along with her father on the station. During her two years of showing she has won 25 ribbons and trophies.
Mr. and Mrs. William Evans received word this week that their son, William H. Evans was promoted to Sergeant. Sergeant Evans is stationed at the 9th Infantry Headquarters south west of Saigon in the Mekong Delta.
Births: a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McGowan July 25th at Dearborn County Hospital.

The Rising Sun High School band will march in the parade at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis on High School Band Day, August 28th.

July 31st, 1958

The Ralph H. Barricklows have bought the former Festus Morehead property on Fifth Street.
Miss Janet Neaman, a 1958 graduate of Rising Sun-Ohio County Consolidated High School will represent Ohio County Girls 4-H Clubs in a Dress Revue at the State Fair in Indianapolis, August 30th.
Four Rising Sun, Ohio National Guardsmen: Technicians Sergeant Kenny Ashcraft, Staff Sergeant Leon Neal, and Recruits Harry Richards and Gene Elliott are at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky, for two weeks with the famed 37th (Buckeye) Division.

July 29th, 1948

Mrs. John A. (Birdie) Barricklow, a member of the Ohio County Welfare Board and the Rising Sun Ohio County Public Library Board was appointed Friday to a four-year term as a trustee of Madison State Hospital.

July 29th, 1938

Homer Tucker, for nine years principal of the Corydon, Indiana High Schools, has accepted a position as Superintendent of Rising Sun Schools, to replace F. E. Conder.

July 27th, 1928

Employees of the coat factory are enjoying a vacation this week while the interior of the building is being painted and repaired.
Wallace Lee, surveyor, has been in this area for two weeks making a survey for gas and oil. Oscar Binder is employed as his associate.

August 2nd, 1918

Frank Newman, printer for the Rising Sun Recorder, who is now in the service, has arrived safely in France.
