Vevay American Legion Post #185 has announced its winners of the annual Flag Education Test program. The test is given each year to students in the fourth grade, with a boy and girl winner from each elementary school in the county being named.
Lowell Wayne Sullivan, the Flag Education chairman of Post #185, said that students are asked to take a test that covers all aspects of the American Flag. Once they finish their test, students are asked to turn their test over and write an essay on what the flag means to them.
This year’s winners at Switzerland County Elementary School were Zach Whitaker and Anna Lockwood; while the winners at Jefferson-Craig were Courtney Hall and Jerry Clayton.
Jerry Clayton earned a perfect score on the test.
Lowell Wayne Sullivan said that the tests and essays of the four Switzerland County winners will now go on to the district level, where those tests will be judged against other post winners in the Ninth District. There are 35 American Legion posts in this district.
The district will then select a boy and girl winner, and those tests and essays will then be judged at the state level, with state winners being announced at the state American Legion Convention in July.
There are 400 American Legion posts in Indiana.
The winning students were each presented with a certificate and also a flag set for their desk.
