2018 Queen of Hearts will be crowned this Saturday night at FFA chapter

The Switzerland County FFA chapter will crown its 2018 Queen of Hearts this Saturday night. The Switzerland County FFA will wrap up National FFA Week this Saturday night when the 2018 Queen of Hearts is crowned.

The pageant will be held in the Switzerland County High School cafeteria, and will begin at 7 p.m. There is a $3 admission charge.

Unique to the Queen of Hearts pageant is that each contestant is asked to identify a charitable platform that they support. The FFA chapter then takes on that platform as an organization during the coming year.

Sierra Hamilton, the 2017 Queen of Hearts, will crown one of nine candidates on Saturday night. Here’s a look at the hopefuls:

– ANNABELLE BEAR is the daughter of T.R. and Lindy Bear, and is being sponsored by Madison Gymnastics World.

She is a member of the varsity golf team; the junior varsity cheer squad; and is a competitive gymnast at Madison Gymnastics World. She is a member of Fredonia Baptist Church; helps at the Salvation Army; collects items for food banks and the Angel Tree Program. She was the second runner up in the 2017 Edelweiss Princess Pageant.

Her platform for the Queen of Hearts pageant is health and fitness; and her career ambition is to be a large animal veterinarian.

– MADESYN LEIGH BYRD is being sponsored in this year’s Queen of Hearts pageant by Anchor Glass & Co. She is the daughter of Janelle Moore.

She is an active member of the Pep Club; is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad; and also participates on the softball team. She volunteers at the River Reach clean up; and also volunteers with the Swiss Wine Festival and at the nursing home. She is a member of the National Honor Society; and has earned inclusion on the honor roll.

Madesyn’s platform for the pageant is the Alzheimer’s Association; and following high school her career ambition is to become a flight nurse.

– LISA CUNNINGHAM is being sponsored in the pageant by Charlotte’s Flowers by Lynn Ryle and Zero Gravity Tumbling. She is the daughter of Johnny and Becky Cunningham.

She is a member of the softball team; and also participates on the cheer squad. She is active in her church; competitive tumbling; and is a member of the Senior Entomology Judging Team, where she qualified regionally and advanced to the state, earning second and third place over the past four years, and this year earned second place.

Her career ambition is to study to be a veterinarian with a minor in entomology; and her platform for the Queen of Hearts pageant is 4-H and entomology.

– ASHLEY DAY is the daughter of Gloria and John Day; and her sponsor in the pageant is Mortenson Family Dental.

She serves as the manager of the football and wrestling teams; is active in Key Club, student council, and is the treasurer of the National Honor Society. She attends River Valley Community Church, where she is a Sunday School teacher, volunteers with church bake sales, and also volunteers with the youth group. She also earned a Gold Medal in the Solo and Ensemble competition.

Her platform for the Queen of Hearts pageant is Encouraging the self worth of youth; and he career plans are to attend Indiana University Southeast and study elementary education.

– LYDIA NORTHCUTT is the daughter of Larry and Danielle Northcutt, and she is being sponsored in the pageant by Curlin Hill Top Farms.

She has been a member of the track team; the cross country team; and has been active with the art club. She is a member of the National Honor Society; and she was also elected as the ‘Niceness Queen’. She has volunteered her time working on the float for the Switzerland County YMCA for the Swiss Wine Festival parade.

After graduation, her career ambition is to pursue a career in paralegal studies; and her platform for the pageant is cancer research.

– ARIEL OEFFINGER is the daughter of Sarah and Keith Oeffinger, and she is being sponsored this year by Vevay Media Group.

She is a member of the varsity volleyball and softball teams; and is active in student council, BPA, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, and the Homecoming and Prom committees. She was Vice President of the Junior Class; and will serve as the Regional 12 President for the BPA. She volunteers at the Swiss Wine Festival and at the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

Ariel’s career ambition is to attend Indiana University and student finance and economics; and her platform for the pageant is SDWR, an organization that works with service dogs.

– KAYLA SCRANTON is being sponsored in the pageant by the Switzerland County Archery Team; and she is the daughter of Lisa and Harold Scranton.

She is involved with the school’s soccer team and also the archery team; and she is also active with the FFA and the school’s academic team. She is also active in 4-H, where she has earned Grand Champion honors for a variety of exhibits and also in shooting sports; and earned third place awards overall for girls in archery. She volunteers with Switzerland County Tourism; and also with the soccer team and FFA during the Swiss Wine Festival.

Kayla’s platform for the pageant is either Riley Children’s Hospital or the Switzerland County Animal Shelter; and her career ambition is to work as a geneticist in the medial field.

– KAITLYN YEARY is the daughter of Jen Coy; and she is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Shell’s Gas Station.

She participates on the varsity soccer and track teams; along with student council, the FFA, Pep Club, and the Veterans Day committee. She is active in the Switzerland Baptist Church Youth Group, and volunteers at the Switzerland County Animal Shelter as well as with the River Clean Up, and the food pantry. She is a member of 7 Hills Church; and is an eight-year member of 4-H. She works at Hometown Pizza.

Kaitlyn’s platform for the pageant is the Switzerland County Animal Shelter; and following high school she plans on attending the University of Cincinnati to become a physical therapist.

– ALIYA GRACE YOUNG is the daughter of Brad and Tiffany Young, and she is being sponsored by Heritage Hill Farms.

She is a member of the cheerleading team; the track team; and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a member of Cross Plains Church of Christ, is a junior counselor at Whitewater Christian Service Camp; and has volunteers with Hope Lodge and the school’s mini cheer camp. She also volunteers with a bake sale benefiting the Ronald McDonald House.

He career ambition is to be a kindergarten teacher; and her platform in this year’s pageant is Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.
