2009 Switzerland County 4-H Fair Queen to be crowned tomorrow night

The 2009 Miss Switzerland County 4-H Fair Queen will be crowned tomorrow (Friday) night when festivities kick off in the Switzerland County High School cafeteria. The pageant will begin at 7 p.m., and the winner and her court will then reign over this year’s 4-H Fair, which will be held July 11th-18th.

This year there are 12 contestants. The winner will also represent Switzerland County at the Indiana State Fair Queen pageant, which will be held in August.

Candidates include:

– ELIZABETH ABBOTT: Beth Abbott is the daughter of Tim and Jenny Abbott of Parks Ridge, and is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by the Clover Kids 4-H Club.

She is a 2009 graduate of Switzerland County High School, where she was a member of the varsity cross country and track teams; and was also the manager of the softball team. She was involved in FFA, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Pep Club; and Conservation Club. She was the 2009 Homecoming Queen at Switzerland County High School; and was the ORVC Mental Attitude Award winner in cross country and track.

She will be a freshman this fall at Western Kentucky University, where she plans on majoring in meteorology and minoring in political science.

– ANDREA NICOLE BROGAN: Andrea Brogan is being sponsored in the pageant this year by the 4-H Rockers Club; and is the daughter of James and Rita Brogan of Florence.

She will be a junior this fall at Switzerland County High School; and is a member of the varsity cross country and track teams; and is also a varsity cheerleader. She was the fourth runner up in the 2007-2008 Swiss Wine Festival Teen Princess pageant; and was vice president of her freshman and sophomore classes. She has earned Grand Champion honors for her sheep project; and has also earned the Intermediate Showmanship award.

Following graduation she plans on attending college and studying elementary education.

– RACHEL LYNN GURLEY: Rachel Gurley is the daughter of Jennifer Miller of near Pleasant; and is a 2009 graduate of Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by the Schenck Mansion Bed and Breakfast.

She was the Swiss Wine Festival’s Edelweiss Teen Princess in 2005; and is the reigning FFA “Queen of Hearts”. She was the vice president of her junior and senior classes; and this year earned the Lilly Endowment Scholarship. She was the second runner up in the 2008 Miss Switzerland County pageant. She was the president of the FFA chapter; co-president of student council; and was a member of the Pep Club.

She will be a freshman this fall at Butler University, where she plans on majoring in psychology.

– KAITLYNN MARIE HALL: Katie Hall is the daughter of Shauna Wiley of near Vevay, and is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by the Moorefield Celebrities 4-H Club. She will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School.

She is a member of the track team, where she earned the Mental Attitude award her freshman year; and was Miss Congeniality of the 2007 Swiss Wine Festival Edelweiss Teen Princess Pageant. She has earned Grand Champion honors with her sheep; and has won the intermediate and senior showmanship awards in sheep. She showed the Grand Champion halter calf and the Grand Champion angus heifer; and was the intermediate beef showmanship award winner.

Following graduation from high school she plans on attending college to become an anesthesiologist.

– MORGAN ELIZABETH NAY: Morgan Nay is the daughter of Rodney and Sally Nay of Vevay. She is a 2009 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School; and is being sponsored in the pageant by The German Corner.

She earned second place in the 2006 “Queen of Hearts” pageant; fourth place in the 2006 Swiss Wine Festival Edelweiss Teen Princess Pageant; and has earned Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion awards in 4-H. She was a member of the National Junior Honor Society; and is vice president of her 4-H club. She is a tenure 4-H member; and is a member of Tri Kappa.

This fall she will be a freshman at Hanover College, where she plans on being a cheerleader and will major in pre-med, with career plans to be an emergency room doctor.

– ALLEISHA G. PALASTRO: Alleisha Palastro is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Belle River Lodge #327; and will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She is the daughter of Gary and Tina Reynolds of Scotts Ridge.

She was a contestant in the 2009 “Queen of Hearts” pageant; and is active in cheerleading; track; FFA; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and the Pep Club. She is also an active member of the Switzerland County 4-H program and her 4-H club. She currently works as a cashier at the Vevay SuperValu. She enjoys photography and scrapbooking.

Following graduation from Switzerland County High School, she plans on attending college and will pursue a career in nursing.

– JESSIE RAY: Jessie Ray will be a junior this fall at Switzerland County High School; and is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by the Julia Knox House Gift Shop. She is the daughter of Troy Ray of near Vevay; and Billie and Shane Jackson of Vevay.

She served as president of her freshman and sophomore classes; and is the co-captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. She is a member of the volleyball team; was the first runner up in the 2008 Swiss Wine Festival Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant; and was Miss Congeniality of the 2009 “Queen of Hearts” pageant. She is a member of the National Honor Society; and participates in FFA; student council; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Following graduation she plans on attending art school in Chicago.

– HAILEE SMITH: Hailee Smith is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by the Posey Pioneers 4-H Club; and is the daughter of Roger and Tonia Smith of Bradford Road. She will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School.

She is a member of the softball team, where she earned All Sectional honors this past season; and is also a member of the varsity basketball team, where she earned the “Sixth Man” Award and the “Most Improved” Award. She also earned the sprint award in track in 2006. She is very active in the 4-H program, earning numerous awards throughout her time in the organization; and is also active in the Business Professionals of America.

Following graduation she plans on attending Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Science and study zoology.

– SHAYLA SMITH: Shayla Smith is the daughter of Betty Gifford of Pleasant Grove Road; and will be a senior this fall at Switzerland County High School. She is being sponsored in the pageant by Gifford Farms.

She served as the secretary of the junior class; and is a member of the cheerleading squad; the volleyball team; Pep Club; Business Professionals of America; student council; FFA; and National Honor Society. She has earned certificates of appreciation from Extendicare and Swiss Villa; and also a community service award from Swiss Villa and the high school.

Following graduation she plans on attending The Ohio State University and major in communication technology.

– HALIE SUE THOMAS: Halie Thomas will be a junior this fall at Switzerland County High School; and is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Showtime Video. She is the daughter of Harold and Tina Thomas of near Vevay.

She is a varsity cheerleader; and also participates on the cross country and track teams. She is a member of FFA; student council; Pep Club; and the French Club. She was voted Miss Congeniality at the Swiss Wine Festival’s Edelweiss Teen Princess pageant; and was voted by her classmates as being the “Biggest Flirt” and having the “Best Eyes”. She works at the Switzerland County YMCA.

Following graduation, she plans on entering the field of child care.

– KIMBERLY DAWN VANN: Kim Vann is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Skeeters Gun Works; and is a 2009 graduate of Switzerland County High School. She is the daughter of Sharon and Troy Stafford of Vevay; and Roger Vann of East Enterprise.

She was voted “Most Cheerful” by her classmates; and served as president of her 4-H club for three years and secretary for one year. She is a 10-year member of 4-H, and has been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #185 for the past five years.

This fall she plans on attending Ivy Tech State College and earning her business degree with a minor in medical and legal.

– EMILEE RENELL WALDRON: Emily Waldron is the daughter of Dorie Peelman of East Enterprise; and is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Tom T’s Electric. She is a 2008 graduate of Switzerland County High School, and just finished her freshman year at Purdue University.

She was the 2008 Edelweiss Princess of the Swiss Wine Festival; was the first runner up in the 2007 Miss Switzerland County pageant; and was the third runner up in the 2006 Miss Switzerland County pageant. She was also the 2008 “Queen of Hearts”; and was the first runner up in the 2007 “Queen of Hearts” pageant. She was the valedictorian of the Switzerland County High School Class of 2008; and was active in FFA in high school, earning her state degree and also serving as an officer. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honors Society.

She will be a sophomore at Purdue University this fall, where she is majoring in pharmacy.
