1st annual Pacer Varsity Club dinner is this Thursday

The Switzerland County High School athletic department has announced the inaugural event in the formation of its new “Varsity Club”.

The first annual Pacer Varsity Club dinner will be held this Thursday, November 6th. The dinner will be held at Belterra Casino and Resort, and there are a limited number of tickets available.

This year’s dinner will feature two guest speakers: Landon Turner and Ray Tolbert. Both were members of the 1981 National Championship basketball team at Indiana University.

Tickets for the event are $30 per person or $50 per couple; and there is also a VIP experience available for $75 per ticket.

The doors will open that evening at 5 p.m.

Landon Turner is a 1978 graduate of Indianapolis Arsenal Tech High School; and a 1984 graduate of Indiana University.

A star player for Indianapolis Arsenal Technical High School, Landon Turner was a member of the 1977 Indianapolis City Championship team. He earned All-City, Sectional, Regional and Semistate awards in 1978; and was a Parade Magazine High School All-American, McDonald’s High School All-American; and a 1978 Indiana All-Star.

Landon Turner was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1989; voted the “Most Courageous Person 1989” by the United States Basketball Writers Association; and was a member of the 2003 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary team.

He was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame if 2007.

Ray Tolbert is a 1977 graduate of Anderson Madison Heights High School; and a 1981 graduate of Indiana University.

In high school, Ray Tolbert was the leading scorer during his senior year at Anderson Madison Heights with a scoring average of 25.1 points per game; the leading rebounder with an average of 13 rebounds per game; and the most blocked shots with an average of six per game.

He was named Indiana’s “Mr. Basketball” in 1977.

At Indiana University, he was a part of two Big Ten Championship teams in 1980 and 1981; was a part of the NIT Championship team in 1979, where he earned MVP honors; and was the Big Ten Player of the Year in 1981.

Ray Tolbert was a member of the 2002 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary team.

He was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame if 2005.

Along with the speakers, there will be an auction, and also the announcement of the details in creating a Switzerland County Sports Hall of Fame.

Tickets are now on sale in the office of Switzerland County High School; and are also available at the Vevay IGA+ store on East Main Street.
