An 11-year-old camper is dead following an early morning thunderstorm that rolled through Switzerland County early Tuesday morning.

The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Camp Livingston (4998 Nell Lee Road Bennington)

on June 21st, at 2:21 a.m. The caller reported that a tree had fallen onto a cabin during a thunderstorm, the cabin was occupied by children and three adults.

The caller stated all the children, except one, were safe with no serious injuries.

Units arrived on scene and discovered that the child, still in the cabin, had died as a result of her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Switzerland County Coroner’s Office.

The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the East Enterprise Volunteer Fire Department, Switzerland County Emergency Response and the Switzerland County Emergency Management Agency.

The young girl is from Bexley, Ohio. The suburban community near Columbus, Ohio is approximately 160 miles and three hours from the rural Switzerland County camp. Youth from seven to 17 use the camp as a summer retrat for Jewish children and has been in operation for more than 90 years. A team of grief counselors from the Cincinnati community arrived Tuesday to assist campers and staff.

Jeff Goldstein, VP and Secretary of the Board of Camp Livingston, read the following statement at a press conference Tuesday.

“On behalf of Camp Livingston, we share with the heaviest of hearts that an 11 year-old female camper was seriously injured around 3 a.m. when a healthy tree was struck by lightning and fell on a cabin at camp during a severe storm. Emergency services arrived shortly after the accident, but she did not survive her injuries.

“There were also three adult counselors in the cabin at the time. No other children or staff were injured.

The family was notified immediately. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. At this time, we are not releasing the name of the camper, out of respect for the family.”

We have resources and professionals at camp to help everyone deal with this tragedy. We ask that at this time everyone respect the family and campers privacy as the children and staff deal with this.”

The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reports that the young girl was identified as Jadyn Larky in an email sent by Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler to city employees. She was a student at Cassingham Elementary School.
